Update - Nanaimo Flying Club Hosted Transport Canada Presentaion

Mr. Gerry Binnema (Transport Canada System Safety Officer) is giving a presentation on the relationship between human factors and errors in flying. Gerry will also provide an update on TC programs. This is one of the few opportunities that pilots will have the attend a TC safety presentation on Vancouver Island.

Gerry's presentation will be delivered at the Nanaimo Flying Club (CYCD) on Sunday April 20, 2008 from 13:00 to 15:30. The timing will allow pilots to fly-in for the presentation. Ample parking is available on the grass opposite the flying club on the east side of taxiway alpha.

Alberni Flying club members are welcome to attend the TC briefing. Those interested should sent their intentions to John Lamb with the approximate number of people and aircraft from Port Alberni.

The weather forecast for this weekend looks great. Both Mars are still on shore. We will open up one of them for the tours. Remember please allow yourself 2 hours after you get here for the tours and return to the airport.

Fly-in Still On

The Alberni Flying Club would like to inform all pilots and Flying Clubs that our 5th Annual Fly-in will be going ahead as scheduled. We like this event to be a tribute to two of our members, Pilots David ‘Aussie’ Guy and Ted Fisher, who died tragically on April 15, 2006. They were piloting our club plane, Cessna 172 C-FBSX when they went down on the Horne Lake ridge near Port Alberni.

Donations for the ‘David Guy Aviation Bursary’ can be made at any branch of TD Canada Trust. Account #6248636, Branch #93020. Please include your name when you are making a contribution. Out of country can contribute by cheque, payable to:

The Alberni Flying Club is looking forward to hosting our 5th Annual Fly-in on Sunday May 7th, 10:00 to 4:00. If you haven't been before make sure that you put it on your calendar. We look forward to meeting to old friends and making new acquaintances.

If you are concerned about weather I will be contacting Kamloops FIC with local weather updates or you can call me on my cell phone (250) 735-0443 for more info on the day of the event. Please allow yourself two hours after you arrive to take in the Martin Mars tour and return to the airport.

Thank you to all the planes that flew into Alberni this past sunday.

We had 58 planes in total fly in and 162 people tour the Martin Mars.

Pat Riley of Powell River won the 50/50 draw. Pat was a deserving winner as he has been to all four of our Fly-in's. Congratulations Pat!

Thank you to the Flying Tankers for their continued support each year. Special thank you's to Base Manager Terry Dixon, Pilots (drivers) Steve Wall, Steve Stackhouse and John deBourcier for making the tours very enjoyable. Awesome job guys!

Coulson Group of Companies deserves a big THANK YOU for lending us their bus and van to get you guys to the Bomber Base. Also they allowed us into the hangar, that was storing their helicopter, to view the Martin Mars video.

Thank you to Susan who volunteered to organize the boat loads out to the Mars.

Last and not least thank you to all the Alberni Flying Club members who come out and volunteer to make sure that this event happens every year.

I will post some photos in the next couple of days.

Fly-in tomorrow

Well, It's finally here. The weather man is calling for cloudy skies with sunny periods and a 40% chance of showers.

Both bombers are now in the water. We will be touring people out to them by boat. Same as last year. To avoid any people jumping the queue in line we will be handing out numbered tickets. Make sure that you receive your ticket from our Flying Club rep when you arrive at the bomber base.

Three weeks to the Fly-in!

Three more weeks to our annual Fly-in. Thank you to all who have posted our advertisement in either their website or on a bulletin board at their local Flying Club. Your support has been tremendous.

Floatplane Pilots:
If you are coming by floatplane there is limited docking space at the bomber base. If there is no room there, you may want to beach your aircraft at the Provincial Park and then walk over to the base by road. We have a shuttle bus going back and forth between the base and the airport so you can take part in the activities at the airport.

Questions being asked are:

Is there an alternate date in case of rain?

Sorry, we have only one opportunity to do this a year. The event goes ahead rain or shine.

Can I drive to the Fly-in?

Most certainly. All we ask is that you come to the airport first and check in before heading over to the bomber base.

Weather:

I will be in contact with Kamloops FIC the day of the event giving them weather updates. Also check out the weather cam at CBS8 for up to date pictures of the weather. www.weatheroffice.pyr.ec.gc.ca/RVAS/default_e.html?section=wqc

If pilots are interested in coming to Alberni the night before the event contact me at (250)724-9626 and I will arrange a pick up for you at the airport. There are several B&B's at the Lake for people to stay.

I talked to Terry Dixon at the Bomber base last week and we are all set for our Fourth Annual Fly-in.

C-FBSX moves into hangar

Our club plane moved into its hangar today just as the snow was falling. Nice to see BSX out of the weather.

The Alberni Valley Soaring Associaton moved their Pawnee out of the hangar to Nanaimo on Monday. Thank you to Mark Johnston and his helpers for moving their plane to Nanaimo.

Pilots if you are going to be using BSX between now and end of February please make sure that you have someone else with you to help you move the plane out of the hangar. If you don't have someone, contact myself @ 724-9626 or Dave Guy @ 724-6724 to give you a hand. The same for when you return with the plane. If you have don't have someone with you please leave BSX parked in it's old parking spot and phone Dave or myself and we will arrange to have it put back in the hangar.

Keys for the hangar are on BSX's key ring.

FEES

1. Aircraft Landing Fees

The charges for aircraft landing fees, based on per 1,000 kilograms, or fraction thereof, of maximum take-off weight are:

a. Less than 10,000 kg $3.20

b. 10,001 to 45,000 kg $4.05

c. Over 45,000 kg $5.08

The minimum aircraft landing fee for commercial aircraft is $15.00.

Apparently they are going to do this by listening to recorded radio transmissions on freq 122.8 indicating that you are landing at the Tofino Airport.

Seems like alot of work for little return.
